PRESENTER

Jillian’s Pilates lineage can be traced back to Joseph Pilates himself through her teachers first generation teachers Kathy Grant, Carola Trier, and Ron Fletcher, who worked directly with Joe at his studio in New York City.  Jillian was originally trained as Ballet dancer, dancing with George Balanchine School of American Ballet.  Jillian had chronic back pain during her dance career. That’s when she was introduced to Pilates to Kathy Grant for treatment, and subsequently, she was introduced by Kathy to Carola Trier in 1980. This is when she began studying with Carola to be trained as a teacher.  .    

Jillian authored the book “Pilates Basics” and has written many articles for Pilates Style MagazineIDEA Pilates Today, and various online publications.  She has classes online on YouTube and Pilates Anytime.

She has also trained and certified many Pilates teachers over the years.  Jillian was dance faculty at the California Institute for the Arts from 1993 to 2005.  She is a regular presenter at the annual Pilates Method Alliance.  Jillian developed her own approach to teaching Pilates  - B.E.A.M Technique.  She is a much sought-after presenter at fitness conventions in USA and around the world, as well as a contributor to many publications on Pilates.  She has also worked with celebrity clients such as Cher, Holly Hunter, Emma Thompson, and Heather Graham.

Knees

The knee is a vulnerable joint and the problems around this joint can be caused by trauma through sports or accidents, poor alignment of the knees, uneven muscle development, poor posture and gait.  Jillia will not only focus on just the knees, but guide participants through an overall look at the muscles of the hip and thigh, leg and foot. She will teach participants rehabilitation, preventive exercises in this workshop to help alleviate pain and aches of the knees and restore coordination and balance of leg movements.

Key Highlights of workshop

  • Learn overall lower body key muscles and skeletal structures that support the knees.
  • Review and show how to apply practical protocols when dealing with problem knees. 
  • Learn remedial exercises that will move, strengthen and improve joint function and health and allow your clients to return to healthy knee movement.

Pilates Mat with Small Props

Small props such as Magic Circle, Elastic Bands, Foam Rollers and Balls can really change up the “same old” Matwork routine.  Not only are props fun, but they provide a point of focus for students to concentrate more deeply.  And the variety has it’s own rewards with a change of pace for everyone, teachers included!  Come play with Jillian Hessel in this fun Workshop, where we will explore the use of small props to enhance your Group Mat classes, or your private sessions. 

Key Highlights of workshop

  • Learn how to use small props effectively and appropriately to make matwork engaging for your students.
  • Learn how to increase repertoire exercises for each individual prop for total mind-body engagement.
  • Learn to vary the intensity of the exercises using different props.

Pilates for Scoliosis

Jillian Hessel is one of only of a handful of 2nd Generation Pilates Teachers with a specialty in assessing and working with clients with Scoliosis.  Having lived with a Double “S” Curve  Scoliosis since her early teens, Jillian has developed great expertise in managing her own aging, curved spine, using both Pilates and Yoga.  She loves sharing her knowledge, and helping Pilates Clients with Scoliosis to lead more active, more pain-free lives is one of her great passions!  Come learn how to manage your own spine, or how to work more confidently with your Pilates Clients with Scoliosis. 

Key Highlights of workshop

  • Learn how to work with clients with Scoliosis.
  • Learn many unilateral exercises on the Cadillac, Reformer, Step Barrel, and Wunda Chair that can be used to "wake up" weak, underused muscles, mobilize stiff joints and help to realign the asymmetrical body. 
  • Learn unilateral exercises, as well as the utilization of props and specific cueing that can help to "reprogram" muscle recruitment and client proprioception, resulting in improved posture, reduced pain, and increased range of joint motion.
