PATRICIA GUYTON

PRESENTER

Patricia Guyton is a Master Teacher, published author, featured speaker at medical conferences including the American Academy of Osteopathic Medicine annual convention, Pilates Method Alliance Alumni Board Member, former registered physical medicine assistant and CO United States Gymnastics Federation coach, video collaborator and distinguished teacher at Pilates Anytime, as well as a sought-after ambassador of purposeful Pilates instruction across the globe.

Pat is the owner of the Pilates Conservatory in Boulder, Colorado ("the fittest city" in USA) that educates students and Pilates teachers in the Ron Fletcher Work.   Pat started her career as a dancer and chanced upon Pilates over 30 years ago.  She understood Pilates movement instantly and very intuitively.  Subsequently, she studied with Ron Fletcher for over eleven years and worked with him as his assistant.

Ron's connection with her and his heartfelt words to her, "we are both well-trained" has inspired her to always raise the bar of personal expectations ever since she met him in his workshop.  To Pat, Pilates is a delivery system for the body to teach healthy movements - all ranges of dimensional motion - from inside of body that extend outwards, living in the real world.  Pat continues to propagate Ron's techniques, infuse with her own unique way of teaching and engaging her students.

800x 550 ppi_pat_STANDING BALANCE

Standing Balance – Integrate Vertical Challenge into Pilates

Balance in vertical is an element of functional movement that should be incorporated into every exercise class. The key to increasing and maintaining balance is to provide the body with opportunities that require a movement that is challenging, safe, and fun. Joe Pilates demonstrated balance in his archival films at Jacob’s Pillow standing on his feet, performing handstands, standing and sitting and running. Often clients limit participation to only the equipment work because it appears to be harder. It is possible to insert places for balance within an exercise sequence throughout the hour.

Teachers can learn how to encourage and motivate clients to enjoy this challenge. During this session opportunities will be presented for integrating balance elements using the following: cadillac, reformer, chair, box, band, pole, weights and magic circles. This information can be inserted into your classes.

Key Highlights of workshop

  • How to incorporate balance work in a challenging and fun manner in your class.
  • Increase your repertoire using different equipment and props in the studio setting.
  • Learn how balance can bring visible results to your clients, which is often times unknowingly under-developed.

800x 550 ppi_pat_SPINAL ARTICULATION IN THREE DIMENSIONS

Spinal Articulation in Three Dimensions

“A Man is as young as his spinal column” --  Joe Pilates.

The exercises on Mat and Equipment provide extensive variety and challenge to maintain spinal strength and flexibility for all levels of students. For a spine to be flexible and healthy, each intervertebral joint must move within the full range of motion that allows for the design of the vertebrae and individual differences in body size, relative health and age.

The key for spinal health is that each of these vertebral joints coordinates with all other joints as the spine flows throughout movement sequences. When teaching articulation it is economical to introduce spinal articulation in the sagittal plane. The posterior spinous processes will provide proprioceptive feedback for student reference. Teaching and feeling articulation in the coronal and transverse planes is not as obvious for the client because the control and precision relies on a combination of muscle and bone cues. Careful explanation from the teacher can assist with progress of full articulation in all planes of motion. Progression through this process will increase functional movement for daily activity and success in Pilates practice.

Key Highlights of workshop

  • Learn how spinal articulations can help maintain a youthful spine.
  • Learn how to execute spinal articulations in three – transverse, sagittal and fontal planes- different planes.
  • Learn how spinal articulations can improve functional movements and mobility for daily activities.

800x 550 ppi_pat DEFINING FLAT BACK AND NEUTRAL SPINE 2

Defining Flat Back and Neutral Spine

“Entire spine must touch mat or floor. Tense body (do not bend arms or legs).” Joe Pilates described supine position on the mat for The Roll Up. Return to Life, page 41.  The description of the placement of the spine in Pilates execution of exercise has been a topic of confusion for years. Many of the early Pilates teachers taught flat lumbar spine in supine. The execution of this position requires the ability to counter-nutate the sacrum while maintaining the pelvis in neutral.

For many students, the information did not clarify how this position would adapt to movement. Science and functional movement consider the position of the sacrum, pelvis and the spine both in relative and coupled motion. Cueing the application of this information for self practice and for clients can be daunting. With some practical insight, it is possible to convey this information to your client. It is fun as a teacher to feel confident in how to teach both static and active movement applied to Pilates exercise.

Key Highlights of workshop

  • To clearly understand definition and execution of a neutral spine and flat back.
  • Learn how to use a neutral spine in movement.
  • Learn how to teach both static and active movements in the Pilates repertoire.
